This has been a prolific year for Dr. Metzger! In addition to other recent releases (here and here), A World for All?: Global Civil Society in Political Theory and Trinitarian Theology is a new volume co-edited by Dr. Paul Louis Metzger, Dr. William F. Storrar, and Dr. Peter J. Casarella.

This book reflects on globalization, ethics, and religion, social theorists and theologians consider answers to this pivotal question. In their ecumenical, interdisciplinary dialogue, capped off by five local case studies from around the world, they contemplate a globally inclusive social vision unbounded by national and ethnic borders and examine the ongoing relationship between civil society and the church that worships a Trinitarian God.

Contributors include Daniela C. Augustine, Alexander Broadie, J. Kameron Carter, Peter J. Casarella, William J. Danaher, Kimberly Hutchings, Kristen Deede Johnson, John Keane, Nico Koopman, Christoffel Lombard, Paul Louis Metzger, Petr Pokorny, J. Jayakiran Sebastian, Rudolf von Sinner, Dirkie Smit, Max L. Stackhouse, and William F. Storrar.

The book is available for purchase here.

I appreciated having the opportunity to talk recently with Mark DeYmaz on his radio program about race, class, consumerism and the multi-ethnic church. Please let me know your reflections based on the interview. I thank God for Mark and his shared vision to live into Jesus’ prayer in John 17: may we (the church) be one as he and the Father are one so that the world will know that God has sent his Son. Such unity includes multi-ethnic church communion. Click here to find out more about The John 17:23 Network, where I and others seek to embody this unity.

Presented by Western Seminary in collaboration with Multnomah University and Corban University, the Faith & Culture Writers Conference: Taking our writing to the streets, the coffee shops, and yes, the church.

When: Saturday, April 2, 2011
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Where: Western Seminary, Portland Campus
5511 SE Hawthorne Boulevard
Portland, OR 97215-3367
503-517-1830

Why are 20 international speakers, activists, theologians, bloggers, publishers, literary agents, professors and award winning authors of every genre gathering to encourage local writers to use their lives and their words to engage and shape culture right here in Oregon—one of the most un-churched regions in the area?

Because Jesus did not sit in church waiting for people to drop by; he mixed with the masses where they were living everyday life. We want to motivate others to do the same through their gift of writing.

There is no “box” to think outside of today—it has been kicked to the curbside and all but trashed. Technology is making electronic books, 24-hour news, self-publishing, I-Pad movies, books sold by mass-marketers such as Amazon and Costco and paid blogging all part of the world of words. Technology is responsible for relationships built on content and delivery rather than face-to-face or face-to page communications.

Director of The Institute for the Theology of Culture: New Wine, New Wineskins, Dr. Paul Louis Metzger is one of two keynote speakers. Complete event details can be found here.

Dr. Paul Louis Metzger has been busy… he has two brand-new books out right now!

New Wine Tastings: Theological Essays of Cultural Engagement is a collection of essays providing samplings of a theological engagement of culture that Paul Louis Metzger has been developing over the years in his work as founder and director of The Institute for the Theology of Culture: New Wine, New Wineskins at Multnomah Biblical Seminary of Multnomah University. Metzger espouses an incarnational over against a predominantly worldview-oriented or market-driven theological approach to engaging culture, and situates his work in Trinitarian communal and co-missional thought forms. This volume of biblically and theologically framed and compassion-driven essays addresses such themes as postmodernity, structural evil, cultural genocide, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, the prison system, the global slave trade, and the arts. It will be welcomed by those analyzing and developing theological-cultural paradigms and engaging key issues in the contemporary setting.

Click here to purchase a copy of New Wine Tastings: Theological Essays of Cultural Engagement for $13.60.

The Gospel of John: When Love Comes to Town is the debut volume for the Resonate series, for which Dr. Metzger serves as executive editor and for which Advisory Council member, David Sanford, serves as managing editor.

The Resonate series recovers the ancient wisdom of Scripture and helps us understand how it resonates with our complex world. The stories and insights of each book of the Bible are brought into conversation with contemporary voices of hope and lament – the cultural messages we interact with on a daily basis. The Scriptures become a meeting ground where God speaks to the pressing concerns of our day, and we are confronted in turn with a fresh experience of God’s truth. In this journey through the Gospel of John, Paul Louis Metzger wrestles with the question of what happens when God, who is love, comes to town and takes up residence among us. For some this new neighbor love is welcome; for others, unusual; for still others, suspect – even dangerous. We learn from John’s Gospel what it means to be called friends and lovers of God, what it means to put love to death and what it means for love to rise again in our midst and in our lives.

The Gospel of John: When Love Comes to Town is available on Amazon for $12.24. Click here for more information on purchasing the book.

Gospel, Church and Culture Workshop
http://new-wineskins.org/events/2008/10/gospel-church-and-culture-workshop/
This Saturday OCT. 16 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM in Travis-Lovitt Hall
Suggested donation: $5.00 per individual Dr. Paul Louis Metzger and Dr. Brad Harper will be speaking about how the church is to minister in culture as the triune God’s kingdom community.
Metzger and Harper will address such questions as “What is the gospel?” “What should the church’s relation to culture be?” and “What difference does it make for the church in its ministry in the broader culture that it is the triune God’s kingdom community?” Tony Kriz will serve as the MC for the workshop. There will be ample time for Q&A during the proceedings. As Christ-followers committed to Christ’s church’s missional outreach, it is important that we exegete rightly the Bible as well as the culture into which we seek to communicate the gospel.

It’s time to get get engaged! New Wine is in need of volunteers with various skills:

Graphic design: New Wine needs fliers, handouts, programs, and other print pieces for its various events throughout the year. This would be a great way for a student to earn Student Ministry credit, for a budding designer to get more practice, or for a practicing artist to creatively contribute to New Wine. We’ve got CS3, you bring the talent!

Administrative: New Wine has various bulk mailings to send out during the year: newsletters, event invitations, and other publications. If you like stickers and helping our community learn about New Wine, please consider giving a bit of time every couple of weeks to get together with others and stick labels on mailings.

Conference: If you like working behind the scenes at events, please consider volunteering some time to help with this year’s conference on Faith and the Arts. From strategic planning to hospitality to promotions to day-of activity, there’s much to get done before the Spring, and you can be a part of the planning and creation!

If you are ready to get involved or have questions, contact Sarah Kurth or stop by the New Wine office in Travis-Lovitt Hall.

Over the years the community of New Wine, New Wineskins has evolved in how we integrate students and non-students into participating in the Institute’s activities and events. While there are many activities that New Wine implements (forums, mentorships, conferences, discussions) which address various contemporary issues, the heart of New Wine is a community of people that long to bear witness (point) to Christ in contemporary culture. The key to becoming involved with and active in New Wine is by attending the events where our community is formed. There are two main gatherings that constitute the core of the New Wine community from which the New Wine activities take life:

Monday Night Dinners. Every Monday night from 6-8 PM we meet 2 miles south of Multnomah’s campus at 2741 SE 87th Ave to share a potluck dinner together with people from diverse backgrounds. The first hour is spent sharing a meal with one another and the second is spent sharing our lives with one another. This dinner is open to both Christian and non-Christian, religious or non-religious. Come ready to listen and engage people and stories from a diversity of backgrounds and beliefs. If you are interested in helping cook a main entree please contact Laura Mettler at lmettler@multnomah.edu.

New Wine Discipleship Groups (Male and Female). The women will be meeting at Laura Mettler and Kelsi John’s house at 5513 SE Yamhill on Wednesday at 6:45 PM. The men will be meeting at the A-Frame every other Friday Morning from 8-10 AM beginning Sept. 26th. These smaller groups form the heartbeat of our community as we get to know one another, while we discuss and struggle through how we as followers of Christ can best bear witness to Christ in contemporary culture. For more information on the women’s group please contact Crystal Santos crystalksantos@gmail.com or for the men’s group please contact Ross Halbach ross.halbach@gmail.com.
