What does it mean to be a man? What does it mean to be a woman? Does it even matter? How do these questions bear upon topics such as how we work together in society at large and the church in ways that affirm and promote us in all that God has created us to be? It is so important to seek clarity with civility in pursuit of biblical unity, diversity, and honor in a culture where our beauty as God’s human creation is so often endangered by physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse. We approached gender identity from a variety of angles in a biblically integrated and in a culturally meaningful manner. We had a full slate of topics including gender roles, sex trafficking, pornography, gender non-conforming, masculinity, femininity, complementarianism, egalitarianism, the Trinity and gender, gender and social construction, headship, and ethnicity and gender.

New Wine hosted this conference on Saturday, March 3 from 9am – 4pm at Multnomah Biblical Seminary (8435 NE Glisan St. in Portland). Speakers included Steve and Celestia Tracy (Mending the Soul Ministries), Val Clemen (Multnomah Biblical Seminary), Barbara Feil (Multnomah Biblical Seminary), Paul Louis Metzger (New Wine Director), Brad Harper (New Wine Associate Director), Domani Pothen (Multnomah University), Elizabeth List (Multnomah University), Michael Gurney (Multnomah University), Tom Schiave (Multnomah Biblical Seminary), Katie Langner (Multnomah Biblical Seminary), Wink Chin (New Wine), Cliff Chappell (New Wine), and Beyth Hogue Greenetz (New Wine).

Yes, we accept registrations at the door! Swing by around 8:30am and we’ll get you all squared away.

People worship. Whether we’re talking about money, work, sex, drugs, rock n roll, or the Triune God. At this conference, we will reflect upon how technology and social media help foster or hinder authentic communion with the Triune God and community with the church and culture at large. We will use worship as a seminal case study, both because many churches frame their community around the “worship experience” and because there is a sense in which all individuals worship someone or something.

Subjects addressed at the conference will include the “fourth wall” which separates leader from participant, forcing us to rethink our models of worship relative to technology. We will ask whether the church’s use of technology seeks simply to improve consumer cultural idolatry (mere entertainment) or if it causes us to enter into the Triune God’s presence corporately. We will examine the double-edged sword of technology and social media, which enables churches to establish satellite campuses – a practice whose theological impact is bound up with our implementation. Further, we will examine how technology impacts our relationships, our authenticity, and our capacity for intimacy.

Our speakers will consider how the church and culture have historically stewarded its resources, dating back to ancient forms of technology. Stories will be shared of utilizing space either for or in spite of public missional engagement.

Keynote speaker, Quentin Schultze, is a leading voice on media and its place in service to Christian worship and mission, as well as a prolific author. Some of his recent titles include High-Tech Worship? Using Presentational Technologies Wisely; Habits of the High-Tech Heart: Living Virtuously in the Information Age; Communicating for Life: Christian Stewardship in Community and Media; and many more. Dr. Schultze will help us discern how best to proceed so that we can love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. He will articulate that technology, like the Sabbath, is made for humans – not the other way around. As actors in the theater of redemption, Dr. Schultze will exhort us to be on guard that we do not let technology use us, but that we use it in the church’s worship experience and in the broader culture of creation.

The Institute for the Theology of Culture: New Wine, New Wineskins of Multnomah Biblical Seminary at Multnomah University brings a theological-cultural vision to this subject. New Wine leaders Dr. Paul Louis Metzger (director), Dr. Brad Harper (associate director), and Dr. Robert Redman (dean of Multnomah Biblical Seminary) will provide biblical and theological underpinnings for the church’s wise stewardship of its various means of communication. They will demonstrate how such resources can be used for the building up of the Christian community and its mission in the world.

Join New Wine, New Wineskins and Quentin Schultze for this educational conference November 5, 2011 from 9:00am – 4:30pm at Imago Dei Community (1302 SE Ankeny, Portland). Registration is available here. General admission tickets are $20.
This has been a prolific year for Dr. Metzger! In addition to other recent releases (here and here), A World for All?: Global Civil Society in Political Theory and Trinitarian Theology is a new volume co-edited by Dr. Paul Louis Metzger, Dr. William F. Storrar, and Dr. Peter J. Casarella.

This book reflects on globalization, ethics, and religion, social theorists and theologians consider answers to this pivotal question. In their ecumenical, interdisciplinary dialogue, capped off by five local case studies from around the world, they contemplate a globally inclusive social vision unbounded by national and ethnic borders and examine the ongoing relationship between civil society and the church that worships a Trinitarian God.

Contributors include Daniela C. Augustine, Alexander Broadie, J. Kameron Carter, Peter J. Casarella, William J. Danaher, Kimberly Hutchings, Kristen Deede Johnson, John Keane, Nico Koopman, Christoffel Lombard, Paul Louis Metzger, Petr Pokorny, J. Jayakiran Sebastian, Rudolf von Sinner, Dirkie Smit, Max L. Stackhouse, and William F. Storrar.

The book is available for purchase here.

Imago Dei Community (1302 SE Ankeny in Portland)

In today’s world, Osama bin Laden symbolizes a lot of things to a lot of people. In our nation alone, his life is celebrated, despaired, and feared by religious groups, political organizations, and individuals. With bin Laden’s recent death, we have been bombarded by a range of responses. From parties, to shrines, to political jockeying, it can be hard to find your own voice. This forum will be an opportunity to develop a Christian response to the death of bin Laden and the world he left behind. We will consider the Church’s public witness on the war of terror by reflections from New Wine leaders, Dr. Paul Louis Metzger and Dr. Brad Harper, and by hearing from several individuals in the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community which is promoting a project called Muslims for Peace.

Watch a video from CBN about the Muslims for Peace project.

Refer to this list of books, articles, films, organizations, etc. relevant to this discussion.

“Bon Voyage…”

“Farewell…”

These are words that create a mental picture for me. The same way that “Your Excellency” creates a picture of someone bowed low to receive a king.

With “farewell” or “bon voyage” I picture an early 20th century scene. A large passenger ship pulling away from a pier filled with people looking back at the familiar audience left standing on the dock. The family members wave back and forth wishing “bon voyage” or “farewell.” The atmosphere is filled with love, longing, and good.

\fer-‘wel\ = a wish of well-being at parting

Recently “farewell” has taken on a new meaning. It has been used in a way that means exactly the opposite of its literal meaning.

In one short message (Pastor John Piper’s Tweet) that circled the world, ”farewell” had its meaning flipped. In <140 characters, the world received a message that was bigger than the message itself.

In a world of hyper-fast communication, using the most universal mediums with the fewest characters possible, we have to be aware of the complex messages we create and communicate in 140 letters. Today the message is much more than the message, if you know what I mean.

On February 26th Pastor John Piper sent a tweet that has spread like wildfire: “Farewell Rob Bell. http://dsr.gd/fZqmd8”.

This was his response to Pastor Rob Bell’s new book Love Wins, which wouldn’t be released for another two weeks. It seemed clear that Mr. Piper had drawn some conclusions, and he wanted the world to get his message. Of course “farewell” meant something in this message… but what? And more importantly, what is the larger ripple effect of such a statement?

I’m definitely not writing this reflection to debate the content of Bell’s book. That has been over-debated already. I’m actually arguing that a more important debate should arise: “Does it matter how Christians communicate with one another and to the world?”

There are two problems with Piper’s message to the world.

First, to say “farewell” is to suggest that somehow Piper is standing in one place (a place of authority/knowledge/etc.) while wishing “goodbye” to Bell, who is headed to some other place. We aren’t sure to where Piper was wishing him farewell.

Is John Piper the standard by which we measure the debate? Is he the man who can stand in a position to “wish” farewell to someone else? Piper’s message communicates to the ever-watching world an authority structure that may not, or shouldn’t, exist. Is Piper the schoolmaster who sends the dunce to the corner?

It raises an important topic, hopefully to be discussed later, about the structures of authority within the universal Church. Is there one? Should there be one? If so, what does it look like in a 21st century global world that is ever increasingly anti-authoritarian? There is a clear biblical standard for authority, but we have divided ourselves to the point that each man or each tiny denomination is its own ultimate authority.

Second (and much more significant than the first), the most damaging aspect of the actions taken in the tweet is the negative impact on the overall Christian witness in the world.

I do know scripture enough to know that John 13:35 does NOT say: “By this all men will know you are my disciples, if you have the proper view of hell.” Instead, it actually says they will know you follow Jesus “if you love one another.”

Any good Bible scholar can find loopholes and ways to wiggle around the blatant truth proclaimed here. You can parse it out and go to the Greek and even redirect attention by focusing on “speaking the truth” or the “watchtower” mentality against heresy. But at the end of the day the statement remains clear. The world will know more about us and what we stand for by how we treat each other than by the explanation of our nuanced beliefs. Therefore, the way in which we treat one another (members of the body of Christ) matters significantly in communicating the truth of the Gospel.

To flippantly send someone away is to communicate to the world that we aren’t even capable of first loving one another. If we don’t love one another even in the worst of times/conditions/shattered theologies, then it is a symptom of a wretched disease. That disease is disunity which in essence is screaming to the world that a loving God isn’t all that real.

Who is this Jesus guy? Does he really impact my thoughts, my message… my tweets?

I have no doubt that both Pastor Bell and Pastor Piper love Jesus. If together we love Jesus then our greatest priorities in life are living for Him and making Him known. And believe it or not, that comes before debating theology, amassing huge followings, even tweeting. I love Dr. Paul Louis Metzger’s interpretation of the Apostle John’s vision at the end of his book Consuming Jesus. Metzger sees a banquet table that includes men from opposite sides of the debate sitting together with Jesus, from MLK Jr. to Jerry Falwell. If Jesus will bring us together to sit at the banquet table tomorrow, then it should impact how we see each other today. At the very least, we should be able to love one another so that the world might know this profound love of God.

At this event Dr. Paul Louis Metzger and Abbot Kyogen Carlson will reflect on their friendship as the “odd couple.” This Evangelical professor and Buddhist priest are not the most likely pairing, but thanks to the deep traditions from which each comes, they’ve been able to engage one another’s convictions to embrace a beloved community. Abbot Carlson will give a tour of the Dharma Rain Zen Center’s shrine and explain its significance to their tradition. Dr. Metzger and Abbot Carlson will model how to dialogue amongst seemingly divergent beliefs, not by tip-toeing around the difficult issues or brushing them to the side, but by embracing the strength of their convictions and their shared tradition of compassion. Participants will have an opportunity to practice such dialogue with the Dharma Rain Zen Center community.

Presented by Western Seminary in collaboration with Multnomah University and Corban University, the Faith & Culture Writers Conference: Taking our writing to the streets, the coffee shops, and yes, the church.

When: Saturday, April 2, 2011
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Where: Western Seminary, Portland Campus
5511 SE Hawthorne Boulevard
Portland, OR 97215-3367
Cost: $65, includes lunch; students $25

Why are 20 international speakers, activists, theologians, bloggers, publishers, literary agents, professors and award winning authors of every genre gathering to encourage local writers to use their lives and their words to engage and shape culture right here in Oregon—one of the most un-churched regions in the area?

Because Jesus did not sit in church waiting for people to drop by; he mixed with the masses where they were living everyday life. We want to motivate others to do the same through their gift of writing.

There is no “box” to think outside of today—it has been kicked to the curbside and all but trashed. Technology is making electronic books, 24-hour news, self-publishing, I-Pad movies, books sold by mass-marketers such as Amazon and Costco and paid blogging all part of the world of words. Technology is responsible for relationships built on content and delivery rather than face-to-face or face-to page communications.

Director of The Institute for the Theology of Culture: New Wine, New Wineskins, Dr. Paul Louis Metzger is one of two keynote speakers. Complete event details can be found here.

At this year’s banquet, we have the privilege of hearing lots of stories of New Wine’s catalytic influence in individual lives and collective communities. Keynote speaker, Suzie Slonaker, is a long-time friend of New Wine. She is the founder of REACH Ministries and her life has been characterized by a profoundly compassionate embrace. In Suzie’s presence, it’s hard not to invoke thoughts of Mother Teresa. Suzie cares deeply and passionately for the most broken and discarded members of our society. Her legacy with REACH Ministries is incarnational theology at its best – God has manifested his transformative love through Suzie’s strong advocacy and tender care for children and families suffering under the oppression of HIV/AIDS. We have much to learn from Suzie’s heart. Join us on Friday, November 12 from 6 – 9pm to be inspired by how New Wine has shaped her work.

An RSVP is required by Monday, November 8. For more details, please email newwine@multnomah.edu.

There are two wailing walls. One is the remains of the Temple, symbolizing in part the sense of oppression the Jews experienced under foreign invaders and their longing for their dreams as a people to be realized. The other wailing wall is that erected by the Jewish state, and which the Palestinians believe marginalizes and keeps them from pursuing their dreams as a people.

This conference seeks to draw attention to the often-unrecognized sufferings of the Palestinian people, and to pursue peace that benefits them as well as Israel. The Western church needs to be concerned for Palestinians (including Palestinian Christians) as well as Israelis and other peoples in the region in view of God’s promises made to Abraham for his sons Isaac and Ishmael and which are ultimately fulfilled in Jesus.

Dr. Tony Maalouf, Director of the MA in Islamic Studies program at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary will be our keynote speaker at this New Wine, New Wineskins conference. Other speakers include David Austin, former executive director of the State Department’s Interfaith Cooperative Initiative in the Holy Land; Debbie Bayes, ESL teacher to the West Bank; Al Baylis, Professor of Bible and Theology at Multnomah Biblical Seminary; Brad Harper, Professor of Theology at Multnomah University; Daniel Isaak, President of the Oregon Board of Rabbis; Richard Reno, President of Portland’s Rizwan Mosque; Leonard Rodgers, Director of Evangelicals for Middle East Understanding; and Judith Rood, Professor of History at Biola University, specializing in the problem of relations between Muslims, Christians and Jews from an historical perspective. Join us on Saturday, October 2 from 9:00am – 4:30pm at Multnomah Biblical Seminary (8435 NE Glisan St.; Portland, OR 97220) for a thought-provoking and eye-opening day.

It will be five days of reflection, formation, renewal and going deep for Christian leaders.

The Duke Summer Institute is not a conference for the many but a learning space limited to 200 Christian leaders to go deep. Over five days of renewal and learning with Christian leaders from across the U.S. and world – through worship, shared meals, plenary sessions, and in-depth cohorts – you will be led by world-class theologians and practitioners of reconciliation and justice ministry. In 2009 there were participants from 23 states and 7 countries. Your fellow participants this summer will include a cohort from east Africa, senior leadership teams from national organizations, several groups from cities and Christian colleges and universities, and leaders from the grassroots to churches to national and international organizations as well as lay Christians concerned about their families, communities and places of worship, work, and life. Scholarships are available through April 9th. Applications will be accepted online through May 7th. Click here for more information and to apply.
